Sarah Stoecker, who teaches Spanish and also works with AVID students, said teachers had joined in promoting "an academic habit of mind" for students to review and think about what they were taught. The use of Cornell Notes in all core subjects, from math to foreign languages, especially for freshmen and sophomores, is an important part of that. Then there is "big AVID," which is a schoolwide effort to make the learning program more effective. In general, the AVID students are given extra help with study skills, organization and other elements of successfully navigating high school. Throughout high school, they take part in AVID classes and activities, including twice a week tutorial sessions in which individual students present something that is giving them difficulty in a class to a small group of fellow students and they work together to help the individual. The kids generally are recruited in eighth grade. Short for Advancement Via Individual Determination, AVID aims to make an education program more effective, both for specific students and entire schools.Īt Brookfield East, there is "little AVID," which involves about 25 students in each grade. Nicolet, West Bend and Mequon-Thiensville are among schools and districts that offer AVID programs. Begun in 1980 in San Diego, the program is used in 4,800 schools across the United States, according to the AVID organization.
The school is now in the fourth year of using a program called AVID. That could be seen even in their middle school record. That was especially true for a group of children who were capable of college success, had decent standardized test scores, but were underperforming when it came to class work and grades. "Were we really preparing them for life after high school?" he said. Dan Pavletich, the principal, said that several years ago, leaders decided they wanted to do more about the number of students who were getting into - but not completing - college. The students' average score on the ACT college admission test is among the top five in Wisconsin.īut the school community has not coasted with that record. It goes back more than half a century and has been used (and often dropped) in many schools, including several in the Milwaukee area.Īt Brookfield East, where Lemberger is a junior, Cornell Notes is a key element of the education program - and a key, in the opinion of school leaders and many teachers, to why the already high-performing school has seen an uptick in overall student success in recent years.īrookfield East is a school where nearly 100% of students graduate and the vast majority go to college. She reviews the overall results, especially when she's preparing for tests. And, after a class or at the end of a unit, she writes in a box across the bottom of the sheet a reflection - basically, a summary of what she thinks she learned. In a column on the left side of the paper, she writes down questions or sometimes phrases that her main notes cover. In a typical instance, she takes those conventional notes within a box covering the upper right section of a sheet of paper and equal to about half the sheet. She doesn't use the usual approach (scribble for page after page, then promptly forget - I've been doing it all my life). Naomi Lemberger says the way she takes notes in class helps things stick in her brain.
